Plums for Scum
The performance is based on an original script by Petar Todorov, inspired by the Bulgarian folk tale of the same title. The project’s aim is to “translate” the folk tale into the language modern children use to communicate, so that they can understand and fall in love with Bulgarian folklore. A hero travels from village to village, offering plums in exchange for scum, hoping to meet a good, hardworking girl to marry. This unusual and funny story from the past, in which many contemporary viewers may recognize themselves with a smile, is brought to life through fireworks of laughter, dynamism, and self-irony. A number of richly colorful characters come alive on stage, carrying the spirit of the Bulgarian national mindset and reminiscent of Radichkov’s heroes — there are no good and bad people, only flesh-and-blood human beings whom the creators of the performance understand and love, even when they criticize their shortcomings.
