"To Be or Not to Be"

"ДАБЪ ДЕШИЛ ИНЕ" is my playful take on “To Be or Not to Be,” which, besides being Hamlet’s monologue, is also the title of a film comedy by the German-born American director Ernst Lubitsch. The performance deals with the inexplicable fact that people have always had some strange dependence on idiots. The village cherishes its village idiot. The city cherishes its city idiot. The state cherishes its state idiot. And its citizens enthusiastically elect him as head of state.

The dictator Adolf Kihler visits “Blagaria” — a land full of blessings — enters a theater, and there he suffers a fatal incident that puts an end to his rule and prevents the “Second Wörld Wör” from happening. It is about to begin after a mad brawl between Osip Stavalin and Adolf Kihler, who play bowling with a cannonball instead of a ball, and with bottles of vodka and schnapps instead of pins. The said war does not happen thanks to the touching efforts not of military experts, not of politicians, but of a humble theater troupe. Of course, Hamlet’s monologue plays its essential role in this endeavor.

The prevention of the “Second Wörld Wör” in the performance does not mean that the Second World War was actually prevented. And we pray that the Third War will not happen...
