The Queen of Spades
ДКТ Пловдив Card game, or game of fate — the game in which we long to win and to attain happiness, love, fulfillment, power. This game stirs our desires into a frenzy. This is the theme explored by the creative team behind the production.
Desires that slowly swell, seize us, subjugate us, and in the end draw us into their vortex, only to spit us back out — disfigured and deformed likenesses of human beings. Or desires that are suppressed, concealed, left unspoken out of fear and uncertainty, leaving us to chew over the routine of our gray everyday life while waiting for mystical salvation.
What is a human being, crucified between the forces of darkness and light? The Queen of Spades is a performance about salvation and damnation, tearing passion and false humility.

- Grand Prix — Best Performance for Adults and Best Director award for Veselka Kuncheva from the International Puppet Theatre Festival for Adults “Pierrot” (2017), Stara Zagora.
- Awards for The Queen of Spades from the International Puppet Festival “The Golden Dolphin” (2017), Varna: Veselka Kuncheva — for directing, Marieta Golomekhova — for set design, and Hristo Namliev — for original music.
- The 2017 Icarus Award goes to Veselka Kuncheva for the direction of The Queen of Spades by A. Pushkin, presented by the guild of creators in the puppet arts.
- Nomination for the “Sivina” Award for a debuting puppet actor to Velizar Evtimov for the role of Count Tomsky.
