THE EPIC OF THE FORGOTTEN

“The Epic of the Forgotten” is a cycle of odes, created to praise our quickly forgotten heroes after the Liberation. The odes bring out both the dark and the bright in Bulgarian history. The history before Liberation, as described by Vazov, is comparable in tragedy and emotional intensity to ancient Greek tragedies. In the performance, we tried to brush the poems clean of the false pathos with which they were recited for many years, and to seek the sincere reading of the contemporary person, the reverence for the heroic deed, but also humbly to grasp the inevitable reckoning. For in the odes there is a constant intertwining of affirmation and negation, exaltation and suffering, resentment and faith, betrayal and heroism on our people’s path toward a free Bulgaria. The Epic of the Forgotten has the important task of awakening collective memory, because it is precisely that which guarantees our historical existence. With the help of the talented actors in the troupe, I believe we have managed to light yet another little candle in the memory of today’s generation.
