WITHOUT YOU IN OCTOBER
The play Without You in October by one of the most significant contemporary Bulgarian playwrights, Konstantin Iliev, is a mercilessly satirical mirror of Bulgarian society from the late 1960s, when it was written, and this predestines its arduous stage life — the play never had a premiere in Sofia, and wherever it was staged, it proved politically inappropriate.
Without You in October is a crime story about the mysterious disappearance of a very valuable gold cross from a monastery; and about the strong but impossible love between a former student and a young criminal investigator.
In the lobby bar of a small Rhodope hotel reserved exclusively for Western European foreigners, the destinies and value systems of a group of young people collide. The tragic ending of this entertaining and amusing story confronts the audience with the chance to answer for themselves the great moral question: What is the price of upholding what is true, and the price of a compromised faith?
