Twelve Angry Men
A son stabs his father—that is how this story begins.
JUSTICE or JUDGMENT? What is the difference? Is it possible to reach a just verdict through the power of persuasion? If so, does that not mean that the power of persuasion can also achieve the opposite? What is the measure? One human life has been taken; another hangs by a thread! Who actually committed the crime?
In the biblical story, we find a telling detail:
“And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, ‘You may freely eat of every tree in the garden; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, you shall not eat of it; for on the day you eat of it, you shall surely die.’”
Did God wish to deprive man of the knowledge of justice? Or was it simply too soon for this newly created being to encounter JUDGMENT? Reginald Rose’s play Twelve Angry Men draws us into this dilemma—one of the hundred greatest works of American culture.
