The plot of the play centers on the family of the deeply religious and domineering farmer Ephraim Cabot. Widowed twice, he fills his own life and that of his three sons with backbreaking labor and tension over the inheritance due to them in time, digging invisible chasms between the members of the family. The news of the aging farmer’s sudden marriage to Abby, a woman much younger than he is and in need of a home, drives the older sons out West and leaves the youngest son, Eben, alone to fight for his rightful claim to the land. Tragic passions are unleashed when Eben and Abby, now at war with one another, discover that in their bitterness toward the other lie repressed desires.
Director Denislav Yanev’s production examines the land as a territory that gives identity to its owner and as an object that brings into conflict radical and irreconcilable views of the “primordial right” to it.
