A Meeting Among Blooming Peach Trees

Kunqu is one of the oldest opera genres in China, with a history of more than 600 years, tracing its origins to the Ming Dynasty. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, Kunqu became one of the most renowned forms of Chinese opera and influenced almost all other styles in the country. For this reason, it is considered the “ancestor of a number of styles of traditional Chinese opera.”

The music in Kunqu opera is delicate and melodic, with a rich repertoire. The dialogues are poetic and refined, the acting movements and gestures are charming, and the martial arts elements are astonishing. It is said that this art form brings together poetry, music, dance, and drama in one.

On May 18, 2001, Kunqu opera was among the first Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity proclaimed by UNESCO.

In Gabrovo, the Shanghai Kunqu Opera Troupe will present the play “A Meeting Among Blooming Peach Trees,” which tells the story of lost and unrequited love.

The performance in Gabrovo will take place on July 8 (Monday) at 7:00 p.m. at the Emanuil Manolov House of Culture. On the day of the performance, tickets will also be sold at the box office of the Emanuil Manolov House of Culture.

The troupe’s visit to Bulgaria is carried out with the assistance of the Embassy of China, and Gabrovo is part of its tour together with Sofia, Ruse, and Veliko Tarnovo.
