About the Production
The idea to stage the musical Dracula emerged thanks to the creative potential of the multi-genre Konstantin Kissimov Musical Drama Theatre—its orchestra, choir, ballet, soloists, and guest soloists. Inspired by Frank Wildhorn’s beautiful music, the dynamic and gripping libretto, and the well-known story based on Bram Stoker’s hit novel, we decided to create this production for the first time in Bulgaria.
The production’s style can be defined as conditional realism, reflecting the spirit of the Victorian era at the end of the 19th century. The alternation of contrasts between everyday-life and horror scenes, presented in period costumes and enhanced by authentic set design and innovative 3D mapping, creates a continuous and compelling action fully in keeping with the requirements of contemporary musical theatre.
As in the original novel, part of the action in our stage version takes place in Bulgaria—in Varna. This lends the production additional color and emotional depth, recalling the historical ties between our lands and the legend of Dracula.
An interesting fact is that Vlad Dracula’s father, Vladislav II, was the son of the famous voivode Mircea the Elder, who was placed on the throne of Wallachia by the Bulgarian Tsar Ivan Shishman. These historical references reinforce the sense of closeness and shared cultural memory between our peoples, giving the production even greater significance and meaning.
