From a statement by Elin Pelin, it becomes clear that the novella "The Geraks" is among his most inspired works. About it, he says that it is "a creative moment – truly mine in my life." Its writing had a specific trigger: the writer’s encounter with a peasant who was leading "a small child, dressed and huddled in a torn little coat," in search of some work for him in Sofia.

Elin Pelin reveals to us, with brutal authenticity, the life of the Bulgarian people from the last century. He reveals it to us "from within"—intimately fused with their everyday existence and aspirations. But if you read carefully, you will see that the writer is primarily interested in the human being itself—its psychology, its sins, and its dreams. Unfortunately, times change, but we do not.
