Madame Bovary
What if the life we dream of is already happening—just somewhere without us?
Emma Bovary is constantly haunted by this fear: that life in its fullness exists somewhere else, in other worlds, and that the present is never enough for her.
The different possible versions of herself compel her to continually measure the distance between the present and the ideal. This gives rise to dissatisfaction and turns the dream into more than just a dream—it becomes a refuge, an illusory world offering escape from reality.
When does the desire for something more become an inability to accept the present? What happens to a person when the life they are living proves too mediocre for the ideal they imagine?
