Inspired by the historical figure of the Genoese doge from the late Middle Ages, Giuseppe Verdi’s opera Simon Boccanegra reveals a world of political intrigue, power struggles, and dramatic human destinies. Populism, the trading of positions, and the manipulation of fickle public opinion make the work a painfully relevant account of the mechanisms of politics.
At its center is a ruler who attempts to govern justly and reconcile warring factions, but gradually finds himself trapped by the very system he seeks to control. His personal tragedy becomes intertwined with conflicts between public duty, paternal love, betrayal, and the thirst for revenge. In his quest to achieve peace, Simon Boccanegra becomes a scapegoat and ultimately falls victim to the relentless struggle for power.
