“My play Crosses from the Past is dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising and the victims of Batak.

I examine this part of our bloody history through the eyes of the modern Bulgarian. These events continue to live on to this day as a living wound. It is painful now as well, and any thoughtless intrusion into it leads to the natural revolt of the true Bulgarian.

We live in difficult times, when we can so easily lose our identity — as a people, as a faith, as Christians, and as descendants of glorious Bulgarians who sacrificed themselves in the name of one love — an independent and free Bulgaria.

By honoring their memory, we are obliged to remember their deeds and to pass on to our children that for which our heroes died: their self-sacrifice is the reason generations after them exist.

And generations after us will exist when we preserve and keep in our hearts these dramatic events from 150 years ago.”
