Albena

The village of our life creates one Albena after another. Yet after each creation, it must begin judging her and admiring her at the same time—thoroughly pharisaical. When they cannot see her, they vilify her; when they do, they worship her. Her very physical presence has a miraculous effect on them.

Albena is an energy we need. And, like any energy, it cannot disappear; it must be redirected again and again. The Albenas are a temptation for the village of life—a temptation toward goodness and beauty united, toward the moral ideal, kalokagathia. It is also a gravitational pull toward the unknown.

Because she is unknown, they want to stone her to death. Because they have succumbed to the temptation, they want to save her. And the pounding of the metaphysical clock-mill marks the passing time until the next cycle, until the next Albena.
