At once sorrowful and tender, this is the story of a young Japanese woman in love—a story from the days when, at the beginning of the last century, Europe was discovering the mysterious allure of the distant East, whose captivating culture includes Japan. It was in those far-off days that “Madama Butterfly” was born—the masterpiece by Giacomo Puccini.
Today, the world is “closer” in its understanding of the romantic and the tragic. The new production by the Ruse Opera will look back to a time when these two worlds were only beginning their dynamic and irreversible fusion.
