DSCH 120 – Shostakovich: String Quartets Nos. 1, 11 and 13
On November 21, Tonъ String Quartet will open its new creative season with a concert dedicated to composer Dmitri Shostakovich.
DSCH 120 marks 120 years since Shostakovich’s birth with three string quartets that reveal three different facets of a composer who turned the string quartet into his personal musical diary.
The First Quartet marks the beginning of his quartet writing and introduces us to the young Shostakovich. The Eleventh and Thirteenth reveal a more intimate and personal side of his work, and bear witness to his longstanding artistic connection with the Beethoven Quartet—the ensemble whose musicians inspired some of the most intimate and enduring works in his chamber repertoire.
The concert will take place at Serdika Triangular Tower, a space whose striking and unconventional character will add to the atmosphere of the event. Standard seating will be available, along with the option to choose your own spot—bring a small chair, cushion, or another comfortable seating option, and decide for yourself where and how to settle in and enjoy the music.
The event will begin with a brief talk by the members of Tonъ String Quartet, during which guests can enjoy a glass of wine, kindly provided by Arrogant Wolf.
Guests will also be able to see a painting created especially for this concert by Tonъ String Quartet violinist Viktor Trenev. Postcards featuring a print of the original artwork will be available for purchase both online and at the venue.
