A garden, a wedding, a suicide, a monk, an intellectual hallucinating, a former actress, another woman: topoi and characters from a non-existent yet authentic Chekhov play. A play as a phenomenon: it predicts situations and motives that promise to come into being later. Here, still unready, in embryo, they attract, send the imagination back to the unease of self-knowledge, provoke, excite. A play of insight (the simultaneity of penetration and revelation) about life as a one-act drama, allowing us to feel what is happening to us in its preordained state. And in its collapse: passion that gives rise to no reciprocity, intimacy that does not lead to love. Loneliness as both privilege and burden. The horror of the promised Elsewhere. Existence set in motion by the light that directs our inner vision toward the darkness within us, laying it bare, protecting, warning. The electricity of thought as an energy reserve, impulse, and instinct for a life-saving recharge-rebirth.
