The Home of Our Dreams?
And how far are we willing to go to turn it into reality?
Jill and Ollie are a young couple expecting their first child and dreaming of something that seems perfectly ordinary at first glance — a home of their own. When the mysterious Miss Dee offers them the chance to get exactly what they desire so deeply, there is one small catch. And with it comes the question that gradually turns everything upside down: what price are we willing to pay for our dreams?
Philip Ridley’s The Home of Our Dreams is a provocative black comedy and dizzying satire of the property market, homelessness and social inequality — a world in which the desire to have “just a little bit more” can easily become a trap.
Director Vasil Duev-Taig’s production looks with irony and sharpness at a painfully recognisable human weakness — the constant striving for the next acquisition, the next level, the next dream. Much like the effect described by Diderot, one new acquisition can create the need for another, followed by yet another, and another still, until desire gradually begins to control the person.
Featuring Boyko Krastanov, Borisa Sarafova-Cherkelova and Koina Ruseva, The Home of Our Dreams turns a story about owning a home into a witty and provocative conversation about consumerism, moral choice and the boundary between what is necessary and insatiable desire.
A black comedy that makes us laugh — and almost immediately afterwards asks us whether what we pursue so relentlessly will really make us happier.
